Center-gai is a lively street in Shibuya, linking the Scramble Crossing area to the Tokyu department store. This street is full of exciting shops, and is a popular gathering spot for the Japanese youth. If you are in the area, check it out!

Center-gai Street is a commercial district that extends approximately 300 m from QFRONT on the famous Scramble Crossing to the Tokyu Department Store. The street is packed with karaoke facilities, restaurants, clothing shops, and other stores.

Recently Renamed “Basketball Street”

This picture was taken at the entrance of the main street in the Center-gai area.

The main street was named “Basketball Street” in 2011 for several reasons. One motivation for changing the name of the street was to improve the stereotype associated with this neighborhood. Apparently, the area in question used to be considered dangerous, despite community policing and beautification efforts. By the word “basketball” people are reminded of healthy, young spirit that the street ideally symbolizes.

The other reason why the main street is named “Basketball Street” is because it leads to National Yoyogi Second Gym, which used to be a sacred ground for basketball games.

The street consists of a strange mix of various stores. The street is lively, and the pedestrians are mostly people in their 20s, 30s or even younger.

You will find karaoke facilities at every corner of the street.

These stores are full of cool fashion items, office supplies and housekeeping items. Go and check out the items are on display!

Inokashira, a Street for More Mature Visitors

Walk on along the large street between the Scramble Crossing and MEN’S 109, then turn left between Seibu Department Store Bldg. and modi.

Inokashira Street starts here.

Stores of famous fashion brands such as FOREVER21, COACH, ZARA can be found along Inokashira Street.

Café and restaurants are tightly packed in these narrow streets. Relatively speaking, these streets are a lot quieter than those in the Center-gai.

Shibuya LOFT offers a variety of office supplies, gadgets and housekeeping items.
