There are countless museums in Tokyo. They range from those showcasing classic and traditional Japanese crafts to art museums dedicated to trendy ukiyo-e from the Edo era and countless modern art museums.
And among this slew of unique museums, you can find the Advertising Museum Tokyo (ADMT), where visitors have access to a large collection of advertising memorabilia!
What's the Ad Museum in Tokyo About?
"The Advertising Museum Tokyo (ADMT) is the only museum in Japan dedicated to the promotion of studies in, and popular understanding of, advertising and marketing" from: About ADVERTISING MUSEUM TOKYO.
As they themselves have put it, the ADMT is a one-of-kind museum in Japan that specializes in all things advertising.
Check Out the Permanent Collection!
The display space is divided into permanent exhibits tracking the history of advertising in Japan, and to temporary exhibitions where award winning advertisements, in Japan and overseas, and items from the museum's collection are exhibited.
The most fascinating aspect of the ADMT is that you can learn about the entire history of advertising in Japan, from its origin to the present. The origins can be traced back to the early Edo era's byoubu-e (paintings for Japanese screens). Developments in ukiyo-e and nishiki-e throughout the late Edo era and early Meiji era gave birth to new forms of advertisements. These then lead to the vintage and more modern graphic designs people became familiar with in the subsequent Taisho and Showa eras, eventually bringing us to what we see today. Let yourself get lost in the dynamic development of Japanese advertising throughout the ages with this exhibit.
The ADMT has made strides in their efforts to digitize a number of pieces in their collection. Visitors can explore various advertisements by using a touch-screen monitor and zooming in on intricate details of the images while gaining vast knowledge of Japanese advertising.
What Temporary Exhibitions Can We Enjoy?
The picture above was taken during the Tokyo Copywriters Club Awards Exhibition 2015 that ran thru August 2nd, 2015.
Temporary exhibitions are not limited to the annual Tokyo Copywriters Club Awards that showcase TCC award-winning pieces, but also include the nation's largest advertising awards, Dentsu Advertising Awards Exhibition, and more. The ADMT puts on all kinds of events and activities to keep the public up-to-date on the world of advertising.
At the ADTM, visitors can also access The Library for Advertising and Marketing, housing approximately 157,000 Japanese books, 3,600 foreign books, and 170 different magazine titles, all of them focusing on all things advertising and marketing. So why not make your way to the library and deepen your knowledge after having gotten your fill of the actual advertisements?
