With 2 Giant Pandas in Ueno Zoo, there are a lot of cute panda souvenirs and treats for sale! What are the best souvenirs though? Let's take look.

Speaking of Ueno, who in Japan could ever forget the arrival, in 2005, of the two Giant Pandas Lili and ShinShin to Ueno Zoo?

They are so popular that Ueno has turned into Panda City, with many panda-shaped goods being sold there.

Since so many of them are high quality and very cute, even overseas travelers, with no knowledge of the two pandas may be interested in these goods.

With that in mind, MATCHA has carefully selected the best shops selling panda goods in Ueno, and today we'd like to introduce them to you!

1. Pan-dama/Funawa

Sweet potato and sugar are modelled together to create a small square of sweet potato jelly and azuki beans, or other sweets, kneaded together to form a bean jam ball (known as Anko *1). These traditional sweets are sold at Funewa, which is only in Ueno.

The anko is modelled to look like the panda’s head. The jelly is then spread thinly over, and chock-full of anko. It looks so good, almost too cute to eat!

The store is located in ecute, inside the gates of JR Ueno Station.

*1 Anko is made with azuki beans, and it has a very smooth texture and a distinct sweetness.
