Old and modern co-exist under the Sky tree in the town of Oshiage, and that you'll find some uniqueness there as well… “Spice Café” is located inside a traditional Japanese style house.

The house of “Spice Café” is mantled with ivy like this.

In a back alley, the café looks like a hidden place, but customers constantly revisit there. It’s because the owner of the restaurant has confidence in his cuisine, and that has been proven by the customers.

The entrance looks like this.

If you go through the entrance, you can see the modern interior of the building that was reconstructed by the stuff of the restaurant. The wood grain makes you feel the tree’s warmth.

The reconstruction was well planned with the texture of the wood, the round window put in the wall covered with plaster, and the sunshine from outside. With the idea of being coexistent with nature, the elaborated idea was reproduced in the house.

The main cuisine of “Spice Café” is curry. Originally, curry is from India, but the owner has explored the world and studied cooking to change its original taste to be more acceptable for Japanese people.

The menu has four basic dishes and two meals that change from day to day. The restaurant’s original dish, “Lassam," is especially the staff’s recommendation. You will be addicted to the spice, and other flavors of curry are also great.

Not only curry, but also we, Japanese, borrowed cultures, food, and different styles of living from foreign countries and improved them to match with Japanese people’s taste since a long time ago. And I think it’s been successful reinventing things into a “Japanese style," just like the curry at “Spice Café”. If you visit Oshiage, you should not miss out on the yummy curry!
