When you think of Kanazawa, a lot of places to see, such as, Kanazawa castle, Kenroku-en, Bukeyashiki (Samurai House) and Chaya gai (tea house district), might come to mind, which brings you back to old time Japan. At the same time, there is a modern art museum which is The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. It is an attractive city to get to know old time as well as modern Japan.
As we said, there are so many places to visit, and you spend so much time walking around that you'll eventually start feeling that rumbling in your belly, and start to wonder where you can get your food fix.
Don't worry though, there is a great place to match your appetite. It is called Omicho market. Let's go and eat a delicious kaisen don (fish row bowl) there.
A gathering place for all of Kanazawa's quality foods
Fresh fish caught in Ishikawa prefecture is brought to the port in Kanazawa everyday. Since Ishikawa prefecture is by the Japanese sea, the fisherman can get to catch fish which is rich in vitamin and minerals in spring, white fish which is rich in proteins and less fat in summer. In the autumn they can catch which have been fattening in preparation for spawning in the autumn, as well as various types of crustaceous creatures in the winter.
Omicho market is a place where you can find all kinds of seasonal seafood.
We went there at the end of July. Squid and white fish were lined up at the shops. All of them looked really good. Buying here at the market was cheaper than buying at supermarkets, so we made a couple of impulse purchases.
The lively market's atmosphere
When we went there in the morning, there were so many people; not only individual customers but also people who work at the restaurants.
Workers at the market were shouting that fish here was cheap and delicious to the customers in order to grab their attention.
There are several ways you can buy the seafood. Some seafood is packed into small containers. Its also possible to buy from just one fish. You know what, you might be able to negotiate the price also, so please give it a try.
You might get lost since there are so many rows of shops all over.
But getting lost could be something you could enjoy in this market. We took our time walking around, looking at various delicious looking shops. So it took us about one hour to look around.
Fresh and delicious seafood rice bowl!
There are a lot of restaurants which sell delicious seafood rice bowls at the market. You can get to eat this special seafood rice bowl, which has several kinds of fish caught near Ishikawa prefecture, and seasonal fish caught in the Japanese Sea.
Before you go, please look up the shops you are interested in, since some shops are open from the early morning but some are open from noon.
The price for the rice bowl starts anywhere from 1000 to 3000 yen. You check to see whether or not it's within your budget. If you do go there though, you should definitely try it.
In the end

The market is a popular spot, since it is really easy to get here from sightseeing places in Kanazawa, which is a 15-minute walk from The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa and Bukeyashiki (Samurai House).
