Shibuya is home to many Izakaya - a style of Japanese bar that serves simple dishes to accompany alcoholic drinks. But, with so many options, how do you decide where to go?

You may want to know if they have menus in your language, or if they serve your favorite foods, but it can be difficult to find out this information before you've already sat down. That's why today we will recommended five Izakaya in the Shibuya area, all of which have English menus.

1. Den Rokuen-Tei: Panoramic Night-time Views

Shibuya Parco Part 1 is not only home to an array of fashion outlets. On the eighth floor, you can find an English-friendly Izakaya specializing in Japanese food.

Unlike many Izakaya, Den Rokuen-Tei has terrace seats, so you can take in the night-time views of Shibuya as you eat and drink.

It also has many unconventional items on the menu for an Izakaya, such as barbecued Japanese Black Wagyu beef.

This is Jikidenya Rokumeikan, located just a one-minute walk from Shibuya Station. Here, the dishes incorporate seasonal vegetables and fresh seafood from Tsukiji Market, and the range of alcoholic drinks is specially chosen by wine and sake sommeliers.

As far as food goes, this Izakaya's speciality is their hotpot dishes, which are cooked in Nanbu Tekki ironware pots - a traditional craft originating in Morioka City, Iwate. These pots really bring out the flavors of the ingredients to create truly exquisite stewed dishes.

This is Kaikaya, an Izakaya that's passionate about fish. Their speciality is fresh seafood straight from Sagami Bay, Kanagawa. Even the interior is filled with a cornucopia of ocean-related memorabilia, from surfboards to illustrated guides and fish. Yakitori, or grilled skewered chicken, has long been a staple of any Izakaya menu. Here at Sumibi Kushiyaki Shogun, you can try something a little bit different - chargrilled Yakitori that contains Shamo meat from Fukushima. Shamo is a type of chicken that was originally bred for cockfighting, and its meat is renowned for its firm, chewy texture.

5. Alcatraz E.R.: A Criminally Cool Experience

shibuya_izakaya_20150916e

This slightly sketchy-looking store is Alcatraz E.R. Shibuya Medical Ward, a concept Izakaya based on the theme of a prison medical unit.

It's not just the decor that matches this theme - the menu too brings to mind the image of a jailhouse hospital. There are even dishes that make use of intravenous drips and syringes. We recommend this Izakaya for those who want a taste of something truly unique.

Please note that those under the age of 18, or those wearing school uniforms, are not permitted to enter even if accompanied by parent or guardian.
