Roppongi is well-known as a prominent entertainment district in the metropolitan area. There are branch offices of foreign-affiliated companies, and foreign embassies as well, so business persons and leading figures from abroad also visit Roppongi. That is why skilled chefs gather here, and visitors can enjoy delicious meals.

Tourists from abroad may want to try Japanese food during their visit. The restaurants introduced in this article all have English menus, so please take a look.

1. Sougo

Sougo offers the modern version of a traditional shojin cuisine [vegetarian diet]. "Shojin" is a word from Buddhism, and its meaning is to devote oneself to Buddha's teachings. Buddhism prohibits the slaughtering of animals and eating its meat. Shojin cuisine is a way to practice that philosophy, as it does not use either meat or fish, and uses grains, pulses, and vegetables only, so it's one way for vegetarians to enjoy Japanese food.

The restaurant opens at lunchtime, with the bar staying open until 5:00am, so customers can visit whenever they want. Some people may feel reluctant to try dishes related to a certain religion, but Sougo offers a casual atmosphere, and it might turn out to be a valuable experience.

2. Seryna Honten

Shabu-shabu is a famous Japanese-style food where ingredients are dipped into hot broth then eaten with sauce. Although there are many shabu-shabu restaurants in the metropolitan area, this restaurant has a long standing reputation.

Seryna is famous for its shabu-shabu, using Kobe beef and crabs. You can also order steak or other Japanese-style food in an a la carte style. The foodstuff is of top quality, so the price tends to be expensive, but many people come to this restaurant for its superb dishes.

Seryna also has a vegetarian menu which requires advanced reservation, so visitors who aren't particularly interested in meat or fish are also welcome.

3. Gonpachi Nishiazabu

MATCHA introduced Gonpachi G-Zone Ginza in a former article, and this Gonpachi is located near Roppongi. Gonpachi is a Japanese restaurant with a creative style, and its design concept is an old-style Japanese house. This restaurant in Nishiazabu is famous for inspiring a classic scene in the movie "Kill Bill." It was also used for the meeting of former United States President George W. Bush and former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, so there are many visitors from abroad.

Gonpachi Nishiazabu's menu includes kushiyaki(*1) and soba (Japanese noodles made from buckwheat). Kushiyaki's ingredients range from staples such as chicken and vegetables, to rare types such as tuna and foie gras.

At Gonpachi, buckwheat is ground in a stone hand mill and made into noodles by skilled staff. The freshly-made soba is fragrant, and looks sophisticated. For further information, take a look at the MATCHA article listed below.

Gonpachi Nishiazabu has many appeals; those wanting to feel the movie's atmosphere should go check it out.

*1: This is similar to yakitori, where skewered meat or vegetables are roasted over a charcoal fire.

4. Jomon Roppongi

Jomon is a kushiyaki restaurant. Compared to the other expensive restaurants in this area, the price range is moderate. In contrast to the other kushiyaki restaurants, Jomon goes with the Hakata-style kushiyaki, which originated in the Fukuoka Prefecture. They offer liquor and dishes from Kyushu, the third largest island in Japan, which includes Fukuoka and Kumamoto Prefectures.

For example, motsu nabe, which cooks pork entrails and Chinese chives in soup made from kelp and dried bonito flakes, is a famous Hakata cuisine. All the shochu at this restaurant is made in Kyushu.

There is a counter seat and a tatami seat, ideal for those who want to enjoy a meal in a Japanese atmosphere.

5. Inakaya East Shop

Inakaya East Shop, which specializes in robatayaki, is the most popular restaurant for overseas tourists visiting Roppongi. There is also a Inakaya East Shop in Roppongi, and a New York Shop as well. Many foreign dignitaries such as the President of the United States have visited Inakaya, which shows how well this restaurant is received.

Robatayaki is cooked on a "irori" (a sunken fireplace) in front of the customers. Ingredients such as fish and vegetables are cooked, placed on a "shamoji" — which resembles a paddle of a kayak — and then handed to the customers. The staff calling out loudly to each other is another appeal to the tourists.

If you're interested in a restaurant favored by the Presidents, then go to Inakaya.

6. Suju Dining Rokkaku

There is a Japanese-style dining place in Tokyo Midtown, which boasts a number of trendsetting shops. Suju Dining Rokkaku is a restaurant offering dishes made from the products of Shinshu (an area with Nagano Prefecture in its middle).

At Suju Dining Rokkaku, you can taste various sake and shochu from all over Japan at its Sake Bar. They also offer vegetarian dishes, and English menus are available, creating a friendly atmosphere for tourists from overseas.

Most of the seats in this restaurant face the Midtown garden, so the customers can enjoy a great view while enjoying their meals.

When you visit Japan, you should enjoy dishes that only Japan can offer; Roppongi guarantees that kind of experience. If you're looking for a gorgeous dinner, try out the restaurants at Roppongi.
