4 Different Ways To Enjoy The Saga Balloon Festa

The Saga International Balloon Festa is a popular event held in autumn in Saga city. This article features the highlights of this festival: balloon workshops, the international competition and the local cuisine.

The Saga International Balloon Festa is an event that you can enjoy in Kyushu each year in autumn. We have introduced the concept of this event in our previous article. This time we will present four ways of enjoying this festival.

1. Enjoy the Balloon Competition!

At the Balloon Festa, you can see two balloon competitions a day - one in the morning in the 6:45 - 9:00 interval and one in the afternoon between 14:45 - 17:00. However, it is decided whether the competition are held or not each time 30 minutes before the scheduled time, because due to weather and wind conditions it may happen that the competitions are cancelled. We recommend you choose coming in the mornings, when the weather tends to be stable.

The Take Off is the Highlight!

Depending on the competition, there are times when you can witness the take of of all the balloons at once.

Balloons That Fly Toward the Main Event Area


In the case of competitions where the balloons take off from outside the main area, they come flying toward this area. If you're lucky enough, you can see balloons flying right before your eyes or above your head.

2. Learn About the Balloons by Touching Them

During this event, there is a service that allows the visitors learn about the balloons.

A Balloon Workshop


Mornings and in the afternoons a Workshop on Balloons is held. This is a great occasion to hear explanations on the balloons from a pilot.


If the weather is good, you will be able to see the process of swelling a balloon or folding it. It is the perfect occasion to actually touch a balloon, so we warmly recommend you take part in this event.

Kids' Day

During the festa, one day is dedicated to children. Called Kids' Day, it is a day when children can see the balloons from close and even get on them.

3.Enjoy Watching the Balloons!

It is fun to see the balloon competition. However, seeing the balloons on the ground is also a pleasant experience.

Balloon Fantasia

Balloon Fantasia is an event where balloons in the shape of cute characters are being raised in the air. It is organized between 9:00 - 10:30. If the weather and wind conditions are good, visitors will be able to see the giant balloons right before their eyes.

Evening Events

During the Evening Events, there are live performances by music bands. It is a time when all the balloons in the area are lit up. (during the last two days the event is held from 18:30 to 19:30.


In the end, there is a fireworks show, closing the event in a very impressive manner. Depending on the weather, there might by times when the balloons cannot be raised, such as in the picture above.

4. Enjoy the Cuisine


One of the great things about traveling is the local cuisine. The Balloon Festa is an occasion to sample the delicious foodstuff specific to Saga prefecture. There are several restaurants, shops and exhibitions on the grounds of the event, so don't lose the occasion to find a favorite product.

At the exhibitions, you can sample local varieties of sake, as you can see in the picture. In addition, you can taste the B-kyu gourmet of the area. Those of you who would like to enjoy the local cuisine of Saga, please be sure to stop by these shops.

In Conclusion

The Saga Balloon Festa is held each year in October. However, in 2016 the event will be organized together with the international competition, which is held every two years.
