Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture is one of Japan's most famous onsen (hot spring) destinations. This location is popular also with Japanese people as it has many sightseeing spots such as: Lake Ashinoko, Owakudani, and the Hakone Open-Air Museum. Hakone has recently seen a rise in the number of foreign visitors and is also gaining popularity as a tourist destination outside of Japan as well.

There are several ways to get to Hakone. Of all the ways to there though, we would especially recommend taking the Odakyu Romance Car run by Odakyu Railways, which you can ride from the Tokyo area to Hakone. It is really convenient as it only takes one hour and 40 minutes from Shinjuku, and you don't have to change trains.

How to Purchase Odakyu Romance Car Tickets

In order to ride on the Romance Car, first you need to buy a ticket. There are two types of tickets you need to purchase: a train ticket and a limited express ticket. The train ticket is the fare to take the train of Odakyu Railways; the price of the ticket varies depending on the distance. You need to purchase this ticket no matter what Odakyu line you ride. The limited express ticket fare is a special far for limited express trains, and is an additional fare you need to pay in order to ride the Romance Car.

There are three ways you can reserve/purchase your tickets.

1) Purchase/reserve tickets by internet
2) Purchase/reserve tickets by the automatic ticket machine
3) Reserve tickets by phone

Please note though that phone reservations can only be done in Japanese, so we don't recommend this method to overseas guests. With that in mind, we'll be explaining the 1st and 2nd methods in detail.
