Ureshino city in Saga prefecture is famous for its hot springs and for the Japanese tea produced in the area, but did you know that there is a place in this city where you can experience the Edo Period?

Hizen Yume Kaidō is a history theme park, created after ”Nagasaki kaidō”, a road that used to cross this region at the beginning of the Edo Period (1603-1868). In 2008 it was renamed ”Ninja Village Ureshino Onsen Hizen Yume Kaidō”, and it has become popular as a place where visitors can experience the world of the ninjas.

If you come by train or bus from Fukuoka city you can reach the Ninja Village in Ureshino in about an hour and 30 minutes. The entrance fees are at the affordable price of 1100 yen for adults and 600 yen (*1) for children.

For those of you who have at least once thought something along the lines of “I would like to meet a ninja!” or “I would like to become a ninja!”, we will introduce the attractions of the Ninja Village in Saga prefecture.

*1 There are several courses, which come at convenient fees. Please check the "Information" at the end of the article.

1. The Ninja Show - A Thrilling Experience!

In the House of the Ninja, the main building in the Ninja Village, you can watch every day a Ninja Show.

The Ninja Show is a thrilling performance, inviting both smiles and tears. The visitors can watch it on weekdays at 11 and 15 o'clock, as well as on weekends and holidays from 11, 13, 15 and 16 o'clock.

2. Take Up the Challenge of Ninja Training! The Training Hall for Shuriken and Blowpipes

Right beside the House of the Ninja there is a training hall where you can practice throwing shuriken, the weapon most often associated with the ninja. Real iron shuriken are used for practice. Since throwing shuriken is an essential part of the ninja art, your training should start here.

The ones who will teach you how to throw are of course ninja! By receiving their guidance, you will be able to quickly brush up your shuriken throwing skills.

In the neighboring training hall, you can experience the blowpipes, which are another fundamental skill of ninja. Through continuous exercise, you can become very skilled at both the art of throwing shuriken and blowpipes.

This is Oryō, the Saga ninja who won the first place at the Iga National Shuriken Throwing Competition in 2015. To have a shuriken champion explaining you the rules of national shuriken competitions and teaching you how to throw is a unique experience that you can enjoy only in Saga's Ninja Village.

3. Slip Into a Dreamlike World - The House of Tricks and Illusions

In The House of Tricks and Illusions you can experience things that will make you doubt your senses. The whole building is like a labyrinth. For this reason, in order to get out to daylight, you need sharp senses, just like a ninja.

For example, this looks just like a usual room at first sight. In reality, the whole room is slanting and you cannot even stand or walk properly.

Your perception of space will be affected by this room in such a measure, that you will have a hard time finding the exit. Everything you will do in this room will be quite an adventure.

This is the mirror room, where you will have trouble knowing in which direction you should go.

Countless faces that appear suddenly in the dark are one more trick that make this building just as thrilling as a horror house. There are many other mechanisms and illusions in the various rooms of this building. Take the next chance and come explore them yourself!

4. Other Attractions

Just like the House of Tricks and Illusions, there are various places in the Ninja Village that can be best enjoyed if you come in groups. One of them is The Edo Quiz Labyrinth, a house that you explore while answering questions about the Edo Period. The Ba-Ba-Ba-Ban Hall, where you can experience horse riding (1000 yen/5 minutes) and feeding the horse is another example.

We also warmly recommend the Cosplay Hall. Dress up as a samurai or princess and walk through the Ninja Village. You will feel like you have become a resident of this place. (The cosplay service fee starts from 1000 yen. Reservation is needed beforehand). For a small fee, you can have your photograph taken on the spot.

While walking through the Ninja Village you may encounter a samurai displaying fascinating feats. This is Gen, the street performer.

Rotating a stick without using his hands, or showing the effects of a cream that makes even the most dangerous of swords unable to cut, are feats that used to be practiced by street performers in the Edo Period. By coming here, you have the unique chance to witness them.

Before leaving, be sure to stop by the Ninja Shop "Hagakure" and the Souvenir Shop Saga-ya. You can buy here shuriken and sweets as souvenirs. The "Shuriken Chocolate" that can be found only here, is one of the favorite items among the visitors.

In Conclusion

By spending a day enjoying the fun attractions in the Ninja Village, you will get the feeling you are a step closer to the world of the ninja. We warmly recommend you visit the Ganso Ninja Village in Ureshino city when you come to Saga prefecture.
