How do you order takeout coffee at Japanese convenience stores? Because the process can be a bit confusing, we explain it thoroughly in this article.

Takeout coffee at convenience stores, such as Seven Eleven and Family Mart, is popular in Japan for its high quality and reasonable prices.

Since customers need to serve themselves though, ordering it for the first time can be confusing not only for non-Japanese but for Japanese people as well.

In this article, we will show you step-by-step how to use the coffee machines at convenience stores.

1. Seven Eleven

First, let's take a look at how to order coffee at Seven Eleven.

Step 1. Get a Cup or Make Your Order

At Seven Eleven, you need to purchase a special cup designed for takeout coffee. There are different cups for hot and iced coffee. Those for iced coffee can be found in the freezer. Take out the clear cup filled with ice by yourself.
There are R (Regular) and L (Large) sizes. Bring the cup to the cashier and pay in advance. For hot coffee, place an order by saying, "Regular sized hot coffee, please" (Hotto ko-hi no re-gyu-ra- saizu wo hitotsu kudasai). The salesclerk will hand you the cup once you've paid.

For iced coffee, unseal the lid after purchase.

Step 2. Place the Cup on the Coffee Machine

Now, place your cup on the coffee machine as shown in the picture above. Most of the time, the coffee machines are placed next to the cashier.

Step 3. Choose the Right "Pour" Button

All you have to do now is to press the button to dispense the coffee.

There are 4 buttons according to the size and type of beverage - R (Regular) and L (Large) each for both hot and cold coffee.

Once you press the button, wait until the cup fills up. Now you're ready!

2. Family Mart

Family Mart has a wider variety of coffees compared to Seven Eleven, such as the cafe latte and cafe frappé.

*Blend coffee is the same as normal black coffee.

1. Make an Order at the Cashier

At Family Mart, all types of coffee must be ordered at the register. The coffee menu is on the counter. There is an English translation with pictures so you can order by pointing to your desired beverage as well.

2. Set the Cup on the Coffee Machine

Once you pay, the salesclerk will give you the cup and you can place it on the coffee machine. There is not much difference in this step when compared to Seven Eleven.

3. Press the "Pour" Button

After setting the cup in place, press the pour button for the beverage you ordered.

Step 4. Customize the Flavor as You Like

At Family Mart, you can customize your coffee by adding flavored powders and sugars for free. There are 3 types available: cinnamon, vanilla, and caramel. You can sprinkle them directly over your hot coffee or cafe latte as you like.

New Beverages Available!

New hot beverages such as English tea, hot chocolate, and a matcha (green tea) latte are also available at Family Mart. Here, let's try ordering a matcha latte to practice how to order beverages other than coffee.

Step 1. Ordering "Matcha Latte" from the Cashier

Tell the salesclerk directly that you would like a "matcha latte". There is only one size available.

Step 2. Get the Cup and Powdered Matcha Latte

Once you've paid, the salesclerk will hand you the cup and matcha latte powder.

Step 3. Put the Powder in the Cup

Fill the cup with the powder. Be careful not to spill it.

Step 4. Add the Hot Water

Place the cup on the coffee machine and press "1". Wait until the cup is filled with hot water.

Step 5. Add the Milk

This process is a bit different from the previous examples. Milk needs to be added after the water - hot milk in the case of a matcha latte or hot chocolate. Press the yellow "2" button and milk will come out automatically.

Step 6. Stir Well

Almost done! Stir your drink well before putting the lid on or the Matcha powder will sink to the bottom of your cup.
