Amami Ōshima is a beautiful island in Kagoshima prefecture, that can be reached in only two-and-a-half hours from Narita Airport using the flights of Vanilla Air.

Japan consists of various islands, large and small. Of the 6,852 islands, the largest island, excluding Okinawa, is Sado in Niigata prefecture.
The second and third largest are Amami Ōshima in Kagoshima prefecture and Tsushima in Nagasaki prefecture, respectively.

In this article we will focus on Amami Ōshima, one of the most charming islands in the Japanese archipelago. We will also introduce the most convenient ways to get there.

From Tokyo - Fly with Vanilla Air from Narita Airport

Amami Ōshima can be reached directly from Tokyo by using the flights of
Vanilla Air, which depart from Narita Airport.

From the metropolitan area, taking the Access Express, via the Narita Sky Access Line, operated by the Keisei Electric Railways, is the fastest way to the airport. It takes only about an hour from Keisei Ueno Station to Narita Airport.

Vanilla Air departs from Narita Airport Terminal 3, so you should get off at the Narita Airport Terminal 2-3
Station. Terminal 3 can be reached in about 10 minutes on foot from the train station.

The check-in ends 30 minutes before the departure time, so be careful not to be late. Also, after the check-in procedures, the passengers have to walk to the airplane, so it's better to stay ahead of time.

While getting on board, the sight of the airplane heightened our mood.

This is the interior of the airplane. The flight takes about two-and-a-half hours from Narita to Amami Ōshima, so it will pass quickly if you take a nap or read a book.

After take-off, Kujūkurihama Beach in Chiba Prefecture comes into view.

There is a tank on display at the Amami Airport, with fish living off the coast near Amami.

The tropical fish swimming around in the tank are an enjoyable sight.

Dorosome - Mud Dyeing

Dorosome
(mud dyeing) is a natural dyeing process, practiced only in Amami Ōshima. We visited Kanai Kōgei, a workshop where visitors can participate in the process.

Ōshima Tsumugi - Silk Weaving

These are examples of the end products, made from materials using the mud based dyeing method.

Ōshima tsumugi
is the name of the fabric made from hand-woven, mud-dyed silk threads - a specialty of this island.

Famous for is elegant, intricate patterns, the materials called "Ōshima tsumugi" are also light, warm and wrinkle-free. Only products using the mud-dyed silk threads are allowed the title of Ōshima tsumugi.

The Amami Ōshima Cuisine

On the island of Amami Ōshima visitors can enjoy unique dishes using fish and vegetables. This rice dish is made by using the purple-colored sap of a local plant.

The local products are served as tempura, as well.

The shōchū beverages, sweetened with local unrefined sugar, are also popular.

On this southern island, only two-and-a-half hours away from Narita, visitors can enjoy unique natural sights and products. If you have a chance to visit, don't miss it.
