When it comes to gourmet in Oita Prefecture, seki aji (horse mackerel) and seki saba (chub mackerel) are very popular. However, there’s another delicacy you should not forget: Bungo beef. Bebenko is a restaurant owned by a ranch that serves dishes featuring this mouth-watering beef.
Fun Before You Step Inside
Bebenko is up on a mountain where you can enjoy fresh air and a beautiful landscape. The owner of the ranch opened this restaurant in the hopes that more people could eat safe, tasty and fresh foods and so that their customers could see who actually produced the foods that they are eating.
'Bebenko' is the Oita dialect word for 'calf', and the restaurant was named as such because the owner wanted their customers to feel as energetic and healthy as a calf raised in the clean, fresh air feels.
Near the front of the restaurant lots of farm animals stand about, but don't worry - they're all too busy enjoying the delicious fresh grass to pay too much attention to customers.
Inside the Restaurant
There are only wooden tables and chairs inside the restaurant; you can also sit on the terrace and enjoy your meal in the fresh air on a sunny day.
Many different Oita specialties are sold near the dining area, so please take a look. You might find some great souvenirs and good food seasonings there.
Bungo Beef Steak Set
The most popular menu at this restaurant is Bungo Beef Steak Set (3980 yen). You can see how good it is just by looking at.
The level of cooking is left up to the restaurant, and they tend to cook it to about medium level. The first bite is heavenly; the tender Bungo beef and its rich flavor fill your mouth easily.
Bungo Beef Yakiniku Bowl
This is the Bungo Beef Yakiniku Bowl (1680 yen), perfect for those on a budget or who struggle to eat large portions. The simple addition of salt and pepper really brings out the flavor of the beef.
Bungo Beef Croquette Bowl
How about trying a gorgeous croquette with Bungo beef inside? First, give it a try without sauce and enjoy its original flavor.
A swirly blueberry soft serve cone! Once you take a bite of this soft creamy treat, the taste of blueberries really spreads through your mouth. And once you finish the whole thing, your mouth will still have a blueberry scent to it for a while afterwards.
They made your mouth water, didn’t they? “Bebenko” is such a wonderful restaurant where you can enjoy the best Bungo beef in a beautiful highland setting and fresh air. It is a bit far from major cities like Oita, Yufuin, and Beppu, but it definitely worth a visit.
