When thinking of flowers in Yufuin, many people might picture the rows of cherry blossoms and canola flower that vividly color the Oita River in spring. Of course, that spectacular scenery is wonderful, but in fact, the truly peaceful and refreshing scenery that is characteristic of Yufuin can be found in the "season of fresh greenery," when vibrant young leaves envelop the town.

Stepping into the back streets of Yufuin today, you'll be greeted by damp, moss-covered old cobblestone paths, rustling bamboo groves, and ancient forests adorned with lush green maple leaves. The shimmering gradation of the young leaves, reflecting the light with every breeze, is a special beauty unique to this season.

This time, we'll take you on a "backstreet wildflower tour," deliberately straying from the main streets and enjoying serendipitous encounters. What awaits you there are tiny, resilient lives nurtured by wind and rain, not plants that anyone intentionally planted.

Colors Along the Tracks & Stone Walls

The boundary where the asphalt road changes to a dirt path, or the small open spaces along the railway tracks—if you look closely at your feet, you'll find an astonishing array of vibrant colors.

Some plants take root in the smallest crevices of old Ishigaki and bloom with crisp, purplish-red flowers. Others, on the slopes along the railway tracks, proudly display their yellow blossoms, having absorbed the warmth of early summer, as if that had always been their home.

And there are also places where purple-pink and lace-like white flowers bloom side by side, seemingly complementing each other, against a green fence, as if carried there by the wind from someone's garden.

These are all natural relics, left behind without any care. The wind carried the seeds, and the abundant water of this land nurtured them into a newly created gallery.

Resilient Life in the Shade

Further in, you'll find yourself in an area lined with hedges and old Ishigaki surrounding private houses. Here, in a slightly damper, shadier spot, you'll encounter flowers that have found their place on their own.

Some plants, adorned with soft pink blossoms, cover rugged rock faces, while tiny, deep pink flowers peek out from the base of large stones or at the edge of the asphalt. And deep purple flowers stand quietly in the cool shade of trees.

These are all places where you can't help but be amazed that they've managed to take root, but the way they continuously open new buds one after another reveals an inner strength that allows them to cling firmly to this land and live, regardless of human worries.

Once you've taken a back road and come out onto a rice paddy path or an open area, be sure to look around.

At your feet, clusters of delicate white flowers, resembling scattered white carvings, cascade down amidst the greenery. Looking up, you'll see trees with tiny white flowers blooming on their new leafy branches, as if covered in snow, and vines displaying a gradient of colors from white to yellow. A sweet fragrance wafts through the air with every breeze, gently soothing your feet as you walk.

And when you shift your gaze to the distance, you see a tall, majestic rose towering against the backdrop of the Yufu mountain range. Its appearance, laden with cream-colored, bell-shaped blossoms, is like that of a guardian spirit that has watched over the changing seasons of this quiet back alley for a long time.

The True Charm of Yufuin: Purely Walking

Choosing souvenirs and trying local food are certainly part of the fun of traveling, but simply gazing at the flowers in front of you and listening to the sound of the wind—spending time like that is one of Yufuin's hidden charms.

Walking along the path, you gaze upon the flowers that have bloomed with great effort, their seeds having been carried there from somewhere. Suddenly, you look up and see the majestic Mt. Yufu towering beyond the lush green rice fields, and faintly in the distance, you can hear the gentle murmur of streams and the chirping of birds in the peaceful countryside.
