Mt. Tenjoyama is also known as Mt. Kachi Kachi Yama, because it is believed to be the setting of a fable by Osamu Dazai. The story is about a mischievous raccoon who is about to be punished for ruining crops but manages to escape by killing the wife of the old man who had captured it. However, a rabbit takes revenge on the raccoon for the death of the granny by setting fire to the wood that the raccoon was carrying. It is said that the sound of the fire - "kachi kachi" - is what inspired the name of the mountain where this story is set. Once you arrive at the summit, you'll notice several figures illustrating scenes from this peculiar and gruesome story.

The splendid view from above, however, will leave a stronger impression than these figurines, though. The top of Mt. Tenjoyama allows an unobstructed view of Mount Fuji and the surrounding area! Even hidden behind a veil of clouds, the majestic figure of Mt. Fuji is a sight to behold.

Fuji-Q Highland is one of the largest amusements parks available today in Japan. It boasts some of the most thrilling rollar coasters in the world, such as Takabisha, Eeejanaika, Fujiyama and DO DO DONPA.

Other attractions include the famous horror house built within an old hospital, a Parisienne theme park with lovely cafes and souvenir shops, as well as the food court area.

Let us introduce below three activities you can enjoy on an afternoon at Fuji-Q Highland.

1. Enjoy the Unique Food Menus!

The Food Stadium, one of the dining facilities within Fuji-Q Highland, is very popular for its unique menus, which are available along with regular dishes such as ramen, soba noodles or katsudon dishes. Some of the unique dishes served at the Food Stadium are the rainbow-colored Cheese Highlander Pizza, the Black Burger (made with squid ink), or the Fujiyama Russian Roulette Curry, a curry rice dish that comes with the rice shaped as Mt. Fuji.

We tried the Cheese Highlander Pizza (980 yen), which was very tasty and had just the right crispiness. Do try out for yourself the unique dishes available at Fuji-Q Highland!

After lunch, if you're not 100% ready to go directly to a roller coaster, how about strolling around the park and visiting the Fujiyama Museum?

2. Fujiyama Museum - See the Many Faces of Mount Fuji

The Fujiyama Museum is a facility housing an impressive collection of modern and contemporary works of art illustrating Mount Fuji. The hundreds of paintings and drawings on display are a vivid proof that Mount Fuji is just an inspiring presence now as it was centuries ago.

Make sure you stop by the museum shop on your way back. They have a great selection of postcards and other items that you can buy as souvenirs from your trip to the Mount Fuji area.

3. A Ride on Fujiyama, the King of Coasters!

After strolling around in Fuji-Q, you should finally gather up your courage and take a ride on one of its attractions. We recommend going for the typical course: roller coasters, for the simple reason that Fuji-Q Highland is famous countrywide for them.

We decided to go on Fujiyama, one of the representative and most popular roller coasters in Fuji-Q.

Amazing Views Of Mount Fuji! An Exciting Day Trip To Kawaguchiko

This is a picture of Mount Fuji taken while standing in line for a ride on Fujiyama. We didn't know it at that point, but the name of this attraction originates in the fact that you can get the best possible view of Mount Fuji only from the highest peak of this coaster! You could even think that this roller coaster was made especially for getting an unobstructed view of Mount Fuji from a high place.

Ok, the view was great, but how was the ride? you might ask.
Well, let's just say that it seemed suitable for beginners from the ground. But, actually, it proved to be one of the fastest roller coasters in Fuji-Q! If you love the thrills, you'll love Fujiyama! The ride is mindblowing and, guess what, you'll want to come again soon to take another ride!

17:00 -- Going Back to Shinjuku Station

Around 17:00, most of the attractions in Fuji-Q Highland begin to close. To return to Shinjuku Station, board the local train headed to Otsuki Station from Fuji-Q Highland Station. Remember that your Mt. Fuji Pass can be used the whole day on Fujikyu lines.

At Otsuki Station change to the JR line and board the special express Azusa to get back.

An alternative route would be to take a Fujikyu highway bus headed to Shinjuku Station or Tokyo Station from the Fuji-Q Highland bus terminal. We recommend this means of transport if you're in a hurry to get back to the city. Please be aware, though, that the highway bus rides are not covered by the Mt. Fuji Pass.

Enjoy Your Day Trip to Mount Fuji!

Watching the sunrise from atop Mount Fuji has become a popular activity for those who love mountain climbing. But a well-kept secret among the locals is that the best way to appreciate Mount Fuji is to enjoy viewing it from the distance. The best area for viewing Japan's symbolic mountain is the Kawaguchiko - Fuji-Q Highland area, and the Mt. Fuji Pass gives convenient access and discounts that make it so easy to explore and enjoy this area to the fullest.

If you wish to get close and personal with Mount Fuji, we recommend approaching it from Kawaguchiko.
