Enjoy Matcha Sweets at Modern Japanese Tea House "nana's green tea"
Written by HishiiSonoe
Tea is a typical and familiar drink in Japan. There are many kinds of teas. Among these, 抹茶(Matcha, powdered green tea) is thought to be as a drink with high threshold and for adults because of its bitter taste. Matcha flavor is very popular as not only drink but sweets. You can find many matcha flavor sweets in Japan. These days, there are many cafes specializing in Matcha products in Tokyo.
I introduce a chain cafe specializing in matcha and Japanese teas "nana's green tea". I t's not too much to describe this cafe as a pioneer of these kind of cafes.
At nana's green tea, you can have a tea break with sweets and drinks or satisfy your hunger with delicious foods. I visited nana's green tea in Tokyo skytree town Solamachi which gets the largest number of foreign visitors.
Concept of Modern Japanese Tea House
The interior is decorated with warm atmosphere woods and white color. The sofas are comfortable and surrounded by green. It is a very stylish place and you can feel their concept: the modern Japanese Tea House.
Each table is separated with white thin curtain. The curtain is well-ventilated and when they sway, it looks like Japanese NOREN curtain.
Sweets loved by everyone
I ate this Matcha and Rice-flour Dumplings Parfait (820JPY).
The matcha, Japanese tea, and red beans you eat at this cafe are their original products and made at a company in Kyoto. Their overall flavor is light on the sweetness. Their matcha ice cream had a simple taste.
It looks like very filling but I could polished it off. Their original red beans with its condensed sweet tastes go very well with matcha. There are matcha jelly and matcha agar in this parfait. So you can enjoy matcha from the beginning to the end.
10% of their customers per day come from other countries at this solamachi shop. And most of them come from Asia. Matcha latte is their standard drink and always popular. And the matcha parfait is popular among foreign visitors. They have menus in Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese. I think this is the reason they're having many visitors from Asia.
"Create Japanese Starbucks"
The director of nana's green tea, Mr. Kusami, wanted to do something which hadn't done in Japan and started his company after having worked at a company.
He came up with the idea of creating Japanese Starbucks and did a market survey in Kyoto. He found that there were no chain cafes specializing in matcha at that time. So he focused on matcha and Japanese tea, and opened his first "nana's green tea" in Jiyuugaoka area in 2003.
Their stores are also located in Shanghai, Singapore, and Malaysia. At their Solamachi store, many tourists take pictures there because it is located near Skytree which is a famous place in Tokyo. He is thinking to expand his business to not only Asia but Europe.
"nana's green tea" offers you the traditional matcha in modern ways of cooking. Maybe it's not far future that they become Japanese Starbucks and we can enjoy matcha all over the world.
