Ureshino Onsen (Ureshino Hot spring area) in Saga Prefecture is famous for one of the Japan’s Top three Bihada hot springs. Bihada means beautiful skin. So spring water here makes your skin better and beautiful.

There are many Japanese style hotels where you can stay and public hot springs where you can take a cheap public bath. A lot of people who are locals and travelers from all over the world enjoy spending time together in hot spring baths.

Let’s take a walk around Ureshino Hot Spring Area. You will find unique things that you can not experience in the other places of Japan.

Many types of Ashiyu (foot baths)

Ashiyu is a foot bath where you can soak your feet in hot spring pools. There are foot baths here in Ureshino Hot Spring Area. But here is the thing. Ureshino Hot Spring Area gives you a unique foot bath experience. Let’s take a look at what you can experience here.

  • Yushuku Hiroba (Yushuku Square)

There was a building used as a public bath which was controlled by a Daimyo(a territorial lord) in Edo period. This old building was used to make this Yushuku Square. Some parts of the building have been remodeled.

You will get to take two kinds of foot baths here for free.
Here is a free Wi-Fi hotspot. So you will be able to look up information you need for your trip while taking a foot bath.

Also foot baths here are of universal design. People who have disabilities can also take a foot bath.

Please bring your own towel. Did you forget to bring one? No worries. If you don’t have one, you can buy it at a shop in front of the Yushuku square.
Springs here in Ureshino Hot Spring Area are rich in sodium bicarbonate which makes your skin beautiful.
It is said that springs which are rich in minerals help to heal and exfoliate your skin.
The foot bath is open for 24 hours. Whenever you feel like taking a foot both, you can always come here to do so. How great is that!

Steam food baths are foot baths where you put your feet into hot steam. Steam here is created by hot spring water.

Like a picture above, you roll your jeans up to your knee and open a lid of the foot bath then put your feet into the holes. You might want to cover spaces between your legs and a foot bath with your towel to prevent the hot steam from escaping out of the foot bath. It is good for your body if you let your feet steam for 10 to 15 minutes.

Hot Steam from spring water makes your skim smoother and more moisturized. It is not that easy to find placeswhere you can have a steam foot bath in Japan. Don’t miss this chance if you visit here. The steam foot bath is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m..

  • Yuyu Hiroba (Yuyu square)

Siebold's foot bath

Philipp Franz von Siebold who was a German physician and botanist who stopped off in Ureshino city on his way to meet a Shogun(a hereditary military governor) in 1826. He took a bath here in Ureshino city and wrote about his experience here in his book titled “Edo Sanpu Kiko (The Diary of Siebold – the visit to Edo)”
This food bath place is named after this story. It is a stone foot bath designed like a Japanese garden.

It is open for 24 hours and has free Wi-fi.

Places you sit on have duckboards on it. So you feel comfortable to sit down here and take a foot bath.

We call this place "Interacting Place” since people who visit here are either locals, from different parts of Japan or even from abroad. It is really fun to get to know every person who is here and talk with them while taking a foot bath. Meeting people from different places here will be a part of your good memories for sure.

Station:Takeo Onsen Station( 武雄温泉駅) on JR Sasebo Line(JR佐世保線).
Access:Take JR Sasebo Line(JR佐世保線) from JR Hakata Station(JR博多駅) to Takeo Onsen Station(武雄温泉駅) which takes you 60 minutes by express train. Then change to a JR bus(the destination shown on the bus will be Ureshino Onsen~Sonogi(嬉野温泉~彼杵(そのぎ)駅行)) to Ureshino Onsen(嬉野温泉) at the south exit of Takeo Onsen station (武雄温泉駅)which takes you about 30 minutes. Then get off at Ureshino Onsen bus stop(嬉野温泉) and walk about 5 minutes. You can also take a taxi from Takeo Onsen station (武雄温泉駅) which takes you about 25 minutes.
