In the Edo period, Asakusa Kuramae was known as an area where many manufacturers resided, and now there are a number of children's toys wholesale stores here. Many stores dealing stationaries, bags, leather goods, and clothing are also drawn to this area. Tokyo Hikari Guesthose is located in a nook of Asakusa Kuramae. It is an adorable inn, a hybrid of the old and modern.

First Floor Public Room: A Renovated Workshop

東京ひかりゲストハウス photo02

The owner of Tokyo Hikari Guesthouse (THG), Mr. Kaneiwa and his family renovated a house formerly owned by a carpenter. The renovation took a year, and there are rooms where you can still feel the presence of the former house. For instance, the public room where the guests gather, used to be a workshop.

The ceiling is four meters high! In this spacious room, the guests can have tea, read books, or chat with the staff and fellow travelers.

Most of the furniture were handmade by the owner's wife, Yumiko-san, who used to teach art at a junior high school. The table shown in the photograph was made from a sewing table and wood.

The sewing machine is used as an ornament, on the wall of the stairs leading up to the second floor.

Rooms with a Nature-Related Image

The rooms of THG have names that are related to nature, such as kumo [cloud], hare [clear sky], tsuchi [earth], and kaze [wind]. All the rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi.
