Enjoy Sakura Season 2020 With Cherry Blossom Beer
In 2020 you can celebrate the cherry blossom season with special locally brewed sakura beers in Japan. Containing real sakura, these beverages have the perfect balance of bitter and sweet flavors.
This year you can enjoy the cherry blossom season with two different sakura flavored beers. One from Hokkaido and one from a small brewery in Kanagawa.
1. Sankt Gallen Sakura Beer
We previously introduced the Sankt Gallen Brewery from Kanagawa for the first time through its Valentine's Day 2020 limited chocolate stout series. While the last stock of chocolate beer slowly disappears from the shelf, it will be replaced by the seasonal "Sankt Gallen Sakura Beer".
Real cherry blossoms were handpicked the year before and pickled to be used in this special spring brew. The beer base is brewed from a mixture of wheat, barley and locally grown rice.
Sankt Gallen beer is generally very strongly flavored and a more bitter tasting beer. The sakura beer uses bitter hop which mingles with the sweet and salty flavor the cherry blossoms. Rice mellows the taste and adds to the sakura mochi flavor of the season limited beer.
The Sank Gallen sakura beer is available in 330ml bottles for 460 yen plus tax at the alcohol department of bigger department stores throughout Japan from February 20, 2020. A full list of the stores carrying Sankt Gallen Brewery can be found on their website (Japanese only).

2. Abashiri Brewery Sakura Ale
Abashiri is a popular beer brewery from Hokkaido. They are particularly famous for their blue beer representing the Hokkaido winter.
The Abashiri Brewery Sakura Ale is a lighter, easy to drink beer. It has a light pink color and a vivid Sakura Mochi flavor.
A 330 ml bottle of the sakura ale retails for 510 yen plus tax. We found it at the alcohol department of a Seibu store.
