Asakusa's Mizuguchi Shokudo - A Good Old Fashioned Japanese Diner
Written by Hori Yuhei
With more than 60 years experience and 100 items on their bilingual menu, Mizuguchi Shokudo has something to offer everyone!
Feeding the Locals for Over 60 Years
Mizuguchi Shokudo can be found in the roku-chome, or sixth district of Asakusa. This quaint Japanese restaurant first opened its doors in 1950, and has been loved by the locals and travelers alike ever since.
Found just a three minute walk from Khaosan World Asakusa, Asakusa Engei Hall, Asakusa ROX, and just 2 minutes from Don Quixote, Mizugichi Shokudo is a great place to stop and grab a bite to eat while sightseeing in the Asakusa area.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is very homey, and this cozy atmosphere is paired with traditional Japanese meal sets. The restaurant is divided into two floors, with seating for 36 on the first floor.
The menu is hung from the wall on sheets of paper, or wooden planks, in traditional Japanese fashion, giving an immediate sense of "Japan" for travelers from abroad.
The second floor differs quite a bit from the first. Where the first floor is more open and casual, the second floor is much more cozy.
The second floor offers a tatami mat floor, and cushions for sitting in seiza (Japanese kneeling)style. The atmosphere of the second floor is welcoming, enticing patrons to stretch their legs, and share a few drinks with good company.
Despite possibly looking small, the second floor offers space for a total of 54 guests.
English Menu Available
Recently Mizuguchi Shokudo has been putting every effort into making their establishment one that both locals and international visitors can enjoy. To better accommodate guests that do not speak Japanese they have prepared a menu in English, and for further ease of use, you can simply point to the photo of what you would like to order too.
For people who are not particularly skilled with using chopsticks, forks and knives are available. But by all means, please give chopsticks a try too!
The Chef's Recommendation: Try the Iributa with Special Original Sauce!
With more than 100 items to choose from, it can be hard to pick just what to eat here. Luckily, the chef recommends the iributa, a pork dish featuring their original sauce (a la carte 580 yen, set 930 yen).
This Mizuguchi Shokudo special consists of sliced pork and onions pan fried in their original sauce. The sweet flavor of the sauce pairs deliciously with the pork, pulling out all of the flavors of this savory dish.
It somewhat resembles a Japanese curry in its flavoring, and has a pleasant texture which is complimented well by the perfectly cooked onions. You might find yourself gobbling this dish down in no time!
The set comes with rice, Otsukemono (Japanese pickled vegetables), and miso soup. The large bowl of rice in the picture is just Futsu (normal) size!
There are more than 100 items for the a la carte menu, including Sashimi and rice bowl meals that are popular with tourists.
