Welcome Suica is a prepaid IC card that can be used for shopping and traveling by train or bus in Japan. Designed with the needs of visitors to Japan in mind, the Welcome Suica is valid for 28 days, requires no deposit, and is non-refundable, which means that you can take it back with you home as a souvenir.

If you arrive at Haneda Airport, make sure to purchase the Welcome Suica so that you don't have to worry about buying train tickets or dealing with Japanese currency on your first day in Japan. The Welcome Suica can be used on all the train lines that support IC cards. This includes the Tokyo Monorail Line, which connects Haneda Airport to stations in central Tokyo.

Go by the Information counter to the left and you'll reach the ticket gates of the Tokyo Monorail Haneda Airport Station.

To the right side of the ticket gates is the JR EAST Travel Service Center (Haneda). This is where you can buy convenient day trip tickets such as the JR TOKYO Wide Pass (10,180 yen, valid for 3 days) or the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku Area: 20,360 yen, valid for 5 days; Nagano and Niigata: 18,330 yen, valid for 5 days).

You can also purchase you Welcome Suica at the JR EAST Travel Service Center (Haneda).

Alternatively, you can use the special vending machine to issue your own Welcome Suica. Select your language and the sum you want to charge your card with (1,000 yen or more).

Your Welcome Suica will be issued together with a Reference Paper that mentions the validity period for your card and other details. Please make sure you have your Reference Paper with you at all times.

The Welcome Suica will be your train ticket for the whole period of your stay in Japan. It can be used on all the train lines that accept payment by IC card, as well as on buses in Tokyo. (*1)

*1... Please be aware that limited express trains and bullet trains (Shinkansen) require reserved seat tickets, which are issued separately from the regular fare tickets. You can purchase your reserved seat ticket using the Welcome Suica but you will need that paper ticket, too, in order to get on the train.
While the local buses operating in the Tokyo area usually accept payments by IC card, highway buses usually require separate tickets.

The Welcome Suica can be also used for shopping at stores that have the green Suica mark. By using the Welcome Suica, you won't need to worry about getting the right change, because the exact sum for all your purchases will be deducted from your card. When the balance on your Welcome Suica gets low, you can recharge it at any time using the train station vending machines or at convenience stores.

This way, you won't need to worry about local currency or getting the right change.
