Shima Onsen

Nestled in the mountains of Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park, this hot spring is said to have an abundant amount of hot water, nature, and the history of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro's baths. In Gunma Prefecture, Kusatsu, Ikaho, and Minakami are representative hot spring resorts, but this was designated as the first national hot spring resort. In spring, the voice of a river deer can be heard from the mountain stream. Wild vegetables such as bracken, fern, and Japanese butterbur grow, and the fresh greenery shines brightly against the clear sky. In summer, the hot spring area at an altitude of about 700m is cool, and you can enjoy fishing for yamame trout and char, playing in the river, hiking, and playing tennis. Autumn leaves change from early October until mid-November. The surrounding mountains are dyed vividly on one side and shine in the mountain stream. In winter, the hot spring town is covered with snow in the snow, and you can relax and soak in the abundant hot water.
