Genkyuji Temple

In the 8th year of Kenkyu (1197), Shigetsune Hirako, who was appointed by the Kamakura shogunate as the head of six sho including Niho, moved to Suo, built a residence in Niho, and conducted political affairs. Shigetsune built this temple in 1199 to mourn the death of the shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo. It is said that the temple was named Jinrakusan Genkyu-ji Temple in hopes of the eternal peace and prosperity of the Minamoto family. The temple treasures include a statue of Amida Nyorai, a statue of Shigetsune Hirako, an image of Hiroari Niho, and a helmet handed down by the Miura family. Around July, the giant lotus, which was revived from seeds found in ruins about 2,000 years ago, is in full bloom, and many visitors come to see it.
