Uwajima Castle

Located in the center of Uwajima city, on a hill about 73 meters above sea level, the castle was first built in 1601 by Todo Takatora, and when viewed from above, the scalene pentagonal castle structure shows Takatora's unique ingenuity. After Takatora was transferred to Imabari, Hidemune Date, the eldest son of Date Masamune, the lord of the Oshu Sendai domain, was granted 100,000 koku of land in Uwa County and entered the castle in 1615. During the reign of the second lord, Munetoshi, extensive repairs were made to the castle, including the castle tower, and were completed in 1672. This appearance remains to this day. The castle hill is a national historic site, and the castle tower is a free-standing, multi-tiered, three-story structure. The castle tower is impressive for its elegant appearance with beautiful white walls and palace architecture such as gables throughout.
