Mount Koya Daimon

The main entrance to Mount Koya is the Daimon Gate, which stands directly in front of the approach leading to the mountain. It is an imposing double gate over 25 meters high, and the current building was rebuilt in 1705. Impressive statues of Kongorikishi (Nio) are enshrined on either side, guarding the entrance to the sanctuary. Passing through here, you will finally enter the sanctuary of Mount Koya, founded by Kobo Daishi. The spectacular view of the Kii Mountains spreading out below is also a highlight, and it is a popular photo spot.
