Murakami Castle Ruins

Murakami Castle is a castle built on Mt. Gagyu at an altitude of 135 meters. Although the date of construction is unknown, it is thought that the castle existed in the early 16th century. During the Sengoku period, it was the stronghold of the Honjo clan and was the site of many battles, including the siege battle with Uesugi Kenshin in 1568. In the Edo period, castle lords such as the Murakami clan, the Hori clan, and the Matsudaira clan remodeled the castle and built a castle town, and Murakami Castle was developed as a central base for the post-Hokuetsu region. The path to the top of the mountain is well maintained and it takes about 20 minutes to climb. As a symbol of Murakami, it is a famous place visited not only by local residents but also by many tourists.
