[D053] Matsudai Snow Country Agricultural Culture Village Center "Agricultural Stage" / MVRDV

Matsudai Nohbutai is a base facility designed by the Dutch architectural group MVRDV. Approximately 40 artworks are scattered throughout the satoyama (rural village) stretching approximately 2km from Matsudai Nohbutai to Matsushiro Castle at the mountaintop. The entire area is known as the Matsudai Nohbutai Field Museum. As you explore the artworks, you'll encounter the Matsudai region's numerous terraced rice fields (rice paddies that utilize mountain slopes), segaeta (rice paddies created by diverting rivers), and the natural beauty of the satoyama, all of which offer a glimpse into the snow country's agricultural culture that dates back more than 1,000 years. In addition to viewing works by world-renowned artists, visitors can also get a glimpse of local people living and working in the rice paddies. Numerous programs allow visitors to experience the region's natural culture, including rice planting in the spring, rice harvesting in the fall, and playing in the snow in the winter. The adjacent cafeteria serves cuisine made with local ingredients, making this an area where you can fully enjoy art, food, and agriculture.
