Ainokura Gassho Style Village

The village spreads out over a long, narrow plateau on a terrace slightly above the surface of the Shogawa River. Of the 27 houses, 20 are Gassho-style houses, and while most were built between the end of the Edo period and the Meiji period, the oldest one is believed to have been built in the 17th century. These Gassho-style houses, as well as other traditional buildings such as temples, shrines, storehouses, and wooden storehouses, thatched fields where thatch is harvested for roofing, and snow-holding forests that protect the village from avalanches are all carefully preserved as historical sites.
