Japan Heritage Site Sato-Numa (Sato-Numa) ~ Defense Swamp [Jo-Numa]

A swamp in the Chuo of the city, Shiro-numa served as an outer moat surrounding the plateau on which Tatebayashi Castle was built, and was a "defensive swamp" and a "natural fortress" for military commanders. In the early modern period, it served as a key location to protect Edo and was the castle of Sakakibara Yasumasa, one of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Tokugawa clan, and Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, who became the fifth shogun. To strengthen its defenses, the castle town was expanded, water was brought into the area, and it was surrounded by moats and earthen walls. On the south bank is the national scenic spot "Tsutsujigaoka", and in the surrounding area are Obiki Inari Shrine, Zenchoji Temple, and Zendoji Temple. You can enjoy sightseeing in the spring azaleas and summer lotus flowers, as well as fishing and watching the swans fly by.
