The COMMOS PROJECT is a research project that explores new material culture in Japan. Launched in 2023, its first initiative is to "disseminate the culture of irreplaceable traditional materials such as igusa and tatami." As a platform for reexamining Japan's lifestyle and industrial structure, the project aims to reexamine the value of igusa and tatami and lead to new ways of using them. The project name, "COMMOS," comes from "komo," the grass that was once considered the origin of tatami mats, and also combines the meaning of "Comm~" from communication and common.
