It was established in February 1982 to honor the Japanese painter Ono Chikkyo, who was born in Kasaoka City, and to pass on his achievements to future generations, and opened in October of the same year. It plays an important role as a temple of Chikukyo art and also as a core art museum in southwestern Okayama Prefecture.
