Hida Tenmangu Shrine

Hida Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the famous god of learning. It is said to have begun when Hida Gonjo Sugawara no Kaneshige heard that his father, Sugawara no Michizane, had passed away in Dazaifu, and built a small shrine and enshrined a wooden statue he had carved himself. There is a stone statue of the "Wishing Cow," a messenger of Tenjin, and it is said that if you stroke the cow and make a wish, your wish will come true, so the shrine is popular with students and prospective students. There are also around 50 plum trees planted on the grounds, making it a scenic spot where you can see beautiful plum blossoms around mid-March.
