Warei Shrine

This shrine commemorates Yanbe Sebei, a noble vassal who was killed while working hard to establish the domain government. Warei faith is worshipped widely in Chugoku and Shikoku as a god of industry, particularly in the fishing industry. Warei Shrine can be said to be its head temple. The enshrined deity, Yanbe Sebei, was born in Yonezawa. Under Date Hidemune, Sebei demonstrated his talent in expanding industry and stabilizing civil administration, but was killed in 1620. After that, those involved in this incident were killed one after another in shipwrecks and lightning strikes, so people feared that they were Sebei's vengeful spirit and enshrined his spirit in the land north of the castle. This was the beginning of Warei Shrine. Faith in him remains strong to this day, and the Warei Festival on July 23rd and 24th is one of Shikoku's famous festivals.
