Autumn Takayama Festival

The Autumn Takayama Festival (Hachiman Festival) is a traditional festival held every year on October 9th and 10th in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. This festival, along with the Spring Takayama Festival (Sanno Festival), is counted as one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan. In 2016, the "Takayama Festival Float Event" was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The main event is the annual festival held at Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine. During the festival, gorgeous floats parade through the city, and at night, the floats are beautifully decorated with paper lantern, creating a fantastical atmosphere. Other highlights include mechanical puppet shows and traditional dances. With a history spanning more than 400 years, this festival allows you to experience Japan's traditional culture in depth.
