Kawagoe Festival

Kawagoe Festival is a traditional festival held every October in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. It has a history of over 370 years and is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. This festival developed under the influence of the Tenka Matsuri (a collective term for the festivals of Kanda Myojin Shrine and Akasaka Hie Shrine) in the Edo period. The biggest attraction of the Kawagoe Festival is the gorgeous floats carrying intricately detailed dolls that are pulled around the streets of the warehouse-lined streets. Flute, drums, gongs, and festival music liven up the festival, and the details of the large-scale floats are a must-see. Particularly at night, the floats lit by paper lantern create a fantastic atmosphere that captivates all visitors.
