Festival of the Ages

Jidai Matsuri is a traditional festival held every October 22nd at Heian Shrine in Kyoto. This festival is known as a place to showcase the traditional craft techniques that Kyoto has cultivated for over 1,000 years as the capital of Japan. Approximately 2,000 participants form a procession of about 2 kilometers wearing costumes and ritual implements from each era from the Meiji Restoration to the Heian period. This festival is filled with the pride and spirit of Kyoto citizens as it allows people to understand the history and culture of Kyoto at a glance. The Jidai Matsuri will make you feel as if you are watching a living historical picture scroll, as the costumes and ritual implements from each era are created based on strict historical research.
