Exhibition: I want to live beyond death

The special exhibition "I want to overcome death and live on" currently being held at the Yayoi Kusama Museum is themed on Yayoi Kusama's view of life and death. Yayoi Kusama has overcome the trauma and neurosis she endured from the Pacific War and her complicated family environment through her creative activities. The exhibition covers a wide range of her expressions, including "self-annihilation," which she expressed through the obsessive repetition of motifs derived from hallucinations after moving to the United States in 1957, and her anti-war works in the late 1960s, in which she painted polka dots on the human body. Also on display will be dark-toned collages and sculptures, as well as poems and novels, which she created after experiencing physical and mental illness and the death of family members in the 1970s and 1980s.
