Yokamachi Street

Inami is a wood carving town that has been designated as a Japanese Heritage Site. Yokamachi Street, located in the center of the city, is lined with many Inami carving workshops, where the scent of wood and the numerous sculptures delight the eye. As you walk down the street, you can see beautiful Inami carvings made using traditional techniques, such as carved wooden bus signs and nameplates. The sound of craftsmen's hammers and chisels can be heard everywhere along this cobblestone street that stretches from the 600-year-old Inami Betsuin Zuisenji Temple. The sound of the mallet is so soothing that it was selected as one of the ``100 Japanese Soundscapes to Preserve'' by the Ministry of the Environment.
