Gofuku Street

Right next to Saidaiji Kannon-in Temple, which is famous for its Naked Festival, there is a street called ``Gofuku Street,'' which is lined with merchant houses with unusual signboard architecture and retains the atmosphere of the Showa era. The Five Good Luck refers to the five types of happiness in life: longevity (long lifespan), wealth (abundance of financial resources), good health (free of disease), good virtue (preference for virtue), and end of life (having the destiny of heaven). It is said that this street came to be called Gofuku Street because the sacred wood that naked people compete for at the Naked Festival was given in the meaning of bestowing five good fortunes. The townscape has a unique atmosphere and has been used as a filming location for many movies and TV dramas.
