In 1886, a Canadian missionary who visited the area was captivated by Karuizawa's beautiful and abundant nature, and built the first villa there. Thanks to this missionary (Alexander Croft Shaw), the summer resort of Karuizawa became known to many people, and now it has developed not only as a summer resort, but into one of Japan's leading resort areas where you can relax throughout the year.
