Special Natural Monument "Nagaoka's Genji Firefly and its habitat"

The fantastic dancing lights of the Genji fireflies in the darkness in early June every year are a must-see. The Nagaoka area of Maibara City was designated a special natural monument in 1952 as "Nagaoka's Genji fireflies and their habitat." There are several firefly habitats designated as natural monuments throughout the country, but this is the only one designated as a special natural monument.
