Ochaen Observatory Guide Sign (Awa Naruto Scenery)

Naruto has long appeared in the Nihon Shoki and Tosa Nikki as "Aha no Mito (Water Gate of Awa)" and "Awanoto (Awa Gate)," and has also been featured in waka poetry, including the "Gosen Wakashu." As part of a project by the Hyogo/Tokushima "Naruto Whirlpools" World Heritage Registration Promotion Council, information signs have been installed that allow visitors to compare the Naruto Strait of the past and present, using Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e print "Awa Naruto no Fukei," which depicts the view from around Ogeshima in Naruto City looking out over Awaji Island on the opposite shore. Information signs are also available in multiple languages (Japanese, English, Chinese, and German), so foreign tourists visiting Japan can enjoy the tour.
