Gifu Kinkazan Squirrel Village

Gifu Kinkazan Squirrel Village is located right in front of the Kinkazan Ropeway Summit Station. The village traces its origins back to 1936, when the Leap to Japan Great Exposition was held at Gifu Park. At the time, Formosan squirrels, which were rare, were brought in for the event. Some of these squirrels later adapted to the wild. Wanting children to experience these squirrels in their natural state, Squirrel Village was established in 1965. Inside the village, squirrels roam freely, climbing trees and gathering food. Visitors can enjoy spending time with these playful animals up close. With its affordable admission, the village is a popular spot, especially on weekends, where wait times may occur. At the ropeway station’s shop at the foot of the mountain, you’ll also find a variety of squirrel-themed souvenirs.
