Owariya Kinshachi Yokocho Store

Owariya, founded in 1898, is a shop that sells beautiful tortoise-colored Moriguchi-zuke and Narazuke. Our store is located in the center of Kinshachi Yokocho. The Moriguchi-zuke that Owariya makes is pickled Moriguchi daikon radish, which is mainly harvested in Aichi and Gifu prefectures. Moriguchi daikon is a vegetable with stronger fiber and less water content than regular daikon. However, you can transform it into a high-quality pickle with a rich aroma by pickling the sake lees from the process of making sake into aged and fermented pickle lees. Moriguchi daikon is a traditional vegetable from Aichi Prefecture that is not available as a raw food. Aged and fermented sake lees are also rare and difficult to obtain. By marinating it for about three years, the result is an elegant pickle that brings out its deliciousness even when eaten with hitsumabushi (thinly sliced unagi over rice) or miso katsu (cutlet). The Moriguchi-zuke made at Owariya is a blend of sake lees collected from across the country. We carefully mature and ferment the sake by hand, and are particular about maximizing the flavor of the sake lees in our Moriguchi pickles. When you actually taste it, you'll notice that it has a crunchy texture that you won't believe has been pickled for three years. The flavor of the vegetables and sake lees come alive in the pickles. Moriguchi-zuke and Narazuke, which are packaged with the three great heroes of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Oda Nobunaga, and Tokugawa Ieyasu, are also on sale, making them perfect as souvenirs.
