Aki Castle Ruins

The ruins of Aki Castle are located in Doi, about 2 km from the city center. The ruins of Aki Castle are the remains of the castle that was the residence of the Aki clan for generations. The castle was first built here around 1308 during the Kamakura period, and the Aki clan lived here until the end of the Sengoku period. However, it was defeated in a battle with Chosokabe Motochika, who was advancing an army to unify Shikoku, and the castle's lord at the time, Aki Kunitora, committed suicide and his retainers were scattered. The castle was built on a small hill about 50 meters high with the Aki River to the northeast, and the castle interior is about 1.8 hectares in size. When the castle fell, the Chosokabe forces attacked with fire arrows from the hill behind the castle across the Aki River, and the castle was burned down in that event. The earthworks, moats, and stonework of the main square that surround the castle remain as they were in the past.
