Salt Road Chojiya

Shio no Michi Choujiya is a building owned by the Hirabayashi family, which was a village headman. In the late Edo period, it was a salt wholesaler, and in the Meiji period, it was a miso and soy sauce brewer. The main building was built in Meiji 23, and the beautiful beams, hearth, ledger, and parlor remain as they were back then. Storehouses were built from the Edo period to the Meiji period, and include a library, a pickle store, and a salt store. Inside the museum, materials related to Chikoku Kaido and Salt Road are displayed, allowing you to learn about the culture of the time. The attached Yabusame Hall introduces children's Yabusame, which is held at Omachi's largest summer festival. In 2017, the main building and storehouse became a nationally registered tangible cultural property.
