Echizen Pottery Village

Echizen Ceramic Art Village was established in 1971. Echizen ware had been in decline since its heyday during the Muromachi period, so the plan was to promote the production area as a base for regional development and to attract young potters with excellent skills and initiative, with the aim of developing it into an industry. The artists who came to the village afterwards still work hard at their creative endeavours, setting up studios and galleries around the village. Echizen Ceramic Art Village is centered around the vast Echizen Ceramic Art Park, which has been selected as one of the 100 Best Urban Parks in Japan. There is also the Fukui Prefectural Ceramic Art Museum, where you can see, make and use Echizen ware, the Fukui Prefectural Ceramic Industry Guidance Office, a base for training successors of Echizen ware, the Echizen Pottery House, where you can buy Echizen ware, the Echizen Pottery Village Cultural Exchange Hall, where you can enjoy coffee in Echizen ware cups, and other restaurants and accommodations.
