Ginzan Onsen’s magical winter snowscapes attract massive crowds every year. However, heavy visitor traffic in the narrow village streets has caused severe overtourism—impacting guest experiences and creating safety hazards. To address this, local authorities have introduced winter entry restrictions to protect visitors and preserve the town.

Measure 1: Park-and-Ride System

Because parking in the village core is strictly limited, private vehicles are restricted between 9:00 and 20:00. While daytime access (9:00 to 16:00) is unrestricted, visitors cannot drive directly into the town center. Instead, park at Taisho Roman-kan (roughly 1.3 km / 0.8 miles away) or a designated overflow lot, then board the shuttle bus into town.

Important Walking Rule: Pedestrians are strictly prohibited from walking into the village. Daytime visitors must ride the designated shuttle bus.

Detailed Shuttle Bus Boarding Process

Arrival at the Taisho Roman-kan Parking Lot:
Please park your vehicle at the Taisho Roman-kan parking lot or in a space designated by security personnel.

Purchasing Tickets and Calling the Bus:
Buy your ticket at the automated vending machine located by the Taisho Roman-kan bus stop. The shuttle runs on a scheduled 20-minute loop (departures are at 00, 20, and 40 minutes past the hour).
There is also a call button at the bus stop. Pressing it confirms to the system/driver that passengers are waiting at the stop. On busy days, the bus will usually stop without pressing the button, but it's best to press it just in case!

Trip to Ginzan Onsen:
Line up at the Roman-kan Transportation Bus Stop. Shuttle travel time is approximately 10 minutes.

Return Trip and Daytime Exit Deadline:
Board the return shuttle bus at the Ginzan Onsen bus stop. Boarding operates on a first-come, first-served basis at all times of the day, so please allow extra waiting time during peak hours.

Crucial Rule:
All day visitors without an evening entry ticket must leave the Ginzan Onsen town before 17:00.

Evening Entry Rules and Overnight Guest Exemptions

Evening access is where many visitors get caught off guard, so it's best to be cautios and double-check your transportation.

• 17:00 – 20:00 (Advance Ticket Required): Visitors without lodging reservations must hold an advance-purchase entry ticket. Entry is strictly capped at 100 people per hour during this window. Advance reservations can be made online from the Ginzan Onsen site (The ticket portal typically opens each autumn around October to November). Advance reservations by phone, email, or fax are not accepted.

• 20:00 – 9:00 (Closed to Non-Guests): Entry into the town is completely closed to anyone without a confirmed overnight lodging or restaurant booking.

• Overnight Guests: Visitors staying overnight at a local inn are exempt from these restrictions at all times and may drive or take designated transport directly to their accommodation by showing their booking confirmation.

Measure 2: Priority Pass System

Ginzan Onsen has also introduced a Priority Pass system. Travelers holding a Priority Pass receive a designated time slot to board the shuttle bus. These passengers will receive priority boarding in their designated time slot. Visitors without a Priority Pass will rely on a numbered ticket queue system, which has longer wait times.

Priority Passes can be booked in advance through the following options:
• Priority Passes can be purchased online or on-site at the Roman-kan Transportation Reception Desk.
• During non-Priority Pass time slots, a numbered queuing ticket system will be used. Those with the Priority Pass can wait inside the facility out of the cold, making for a much more comfortable waiting environment.
• For the return journey, Priority Pass holders may queue in a dedicated priority line.

No Impact on Overnight Guests

Guests staying overnight in the Ginzan Onsen village are exempt from traffic restrictions. When passing through security checkpoints, simply present your accommodation booking confirmation screen or reservation number.

Tips for Visiting Ginzan Onsen in Winter

Cold Weather Precautions

Ginzan Onsen is located in a mountainous area where winter temperatures frequently drop below freezing. Be sure to dress warmly and bring heavy winter coats, gloves, scarves, and insulated snow boots.

Walking Safely on Snow and Ice

Although snow removal is performed along the hot spring street, roads and paths can still freeze over. Wearing non-slip shoes or using anti-slip ice cleats/shoe grips is highly recommended for safety.

Snow Removal Operating Hours

Snow removal operations take place overnight between 20:00 and 10:00. If you are walking around during these hours, please stay alert and yield to snowplows and service vehicles.

Group Bookings via the Official Website

Groups of 20 or more visitors should check the official website, where specific terms and dedicated Group Priority Passes will be announced for application.
