If you love fresh seafood and complete customization, Nokkedon in Aomori is a must-try experience. Served at Furukawa Market, this build-your-own seafood bowl lets visitors pick and choose their favorite local catches to top a bowl of warm rice.
The concept stems from a famous tradition that began with Hokkaido’s Kattedon—where, as the story goes, a local fishmonger advised a traveler on a budget to buy a simple bowl of rice and top it with market-fresh seafood. Aomori offers its own delicious spin on this tradition with Nokkedon, and in this article, we’ll introduce where and how to create your very own.
Heading North to Aomori
Take the Tohoku Shinkansen north to Shin-Aomori Station, then transfer to a local train for the approximately 10-minute ride to Aomori Station. Please note that some train lines in Aomori do not accept IC cards, so you may need to purchase a regular ticket.
Aomori Prefecture is famous for the Nebuta Festival, which was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1980. Together with the Sendai Tanabata Festival in Miyagi Prefecture and the Kanto Festival in Akita Prefecture, it is known as one of the Three Great Festivals of Tohoku.
You'll spot Nebuta Festival decorations as soon as you arrive at Shin-Aomori Station, and they can also be seen throughout Aomori Station. Next to Aomori Station is the striking Nebuta Museum WA RASSE. If you have time, it's well worth stopping by for a visit!
Aomori Station also sells merchandise featuring Wasao, Aomori's beloved Akita dog. Along with Aomori's local mascots and famous apples, Wasao has become one of the familiar faces promoting tourism in the prefecture!
Aomori Gyosai Center
About a 10-minute walk from Aomori Station, Aomori Gyosai Center (formerly known as Furukawa Market) is often described as the kitchen of Aomori City. The market is packed with fresh seafood from the Tsugaru region, and in addition to fishmongers, you'll also find shops selling a variety of prepared side dishes.
Make Your Own Nokkedon Seafood Bowl!
Nokkedon uses a ticket system. Simply visit the different stalls and choose your favorite ingredients to add to your bowl. Each ingredient costs a different number of tickets, so you tear off the required tickets and hand them to the vendor.
After purchasing your tickets, a staff member will first direct you to a stall where you can get a bowl of rice. Then comes the fun part: exploring the market and choosing seafood from the different vendors!
The market has three rows of vendors offering broadly similar types of seafood, but prices and portion sizes vary slightly. We recommend taking a quick walk around the market first before deciding which toppings you'd like to add to your bowl.
Each stall displays its selection of fresh fish and seafood, with the price of each item clearly marked.
Once you spot some seafood you like, simply ask the vendor to add it to your bowl. Just look at those scallops, they're huge, fresh, and incredibly tempting!
There are even beautiful fresh oysters to choose from!
Once you've used all your tickets, find a seat and enjoy your meal! We filled our bowl to the brim with seafood and added an oyster on the side, it looks absolutely delicious!
Take a Walk Around Aomori Port
After enjoying some delicious seafood, we also recommend taking some time to explore the nearby waterfront area.
Aomori Prefecture Tourist Center ASPAM
After your meal, take a stroll to the nearby Aomori Prefecture Tourist Center ASPAM. The first floor has several shops selling local specialties and souvenirs. At just ¥400, admission to the 13th-floor observation deck offers panoramic views of Mutsu Bay. Admission also includes a drink, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful blue waters of the bay.

Nebuta Museum WA RASSE
Located by the waterfront, Nebuta Museum WA RASSE is dedicated to Aomori's famous Nebuta Festival. Inside, visitors can watch footage of the actual festival, and there are also three festival experience sessions held each day. You can even try making a Nebuta lantern yourself. With so much to see and do, you could easily spend hours here without getting bored!
