The best time to see the cherry blossoms along the Yamazaki River is from late March until early April.
The Yamazaki River flows through Nagoya's Mizuho Ward and is loved by the local residents as its "hometown river." The rows of cherry trees in full bloom with their branches overhanging the river are simply spectacular.
During the peak blossom period the area is bustling with people enjoying o-hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties. It's especially busy and crowded on weekends and during the evening illumination. For those who'd like to avoid the crowds, visiting early in the morning on a weekday or in the late afternoon might be a good idea.
Also, the route from Ishikawa Bridge to Kanaebashi Bridge is known as the "Path of Spring," from Kanaebashi Bridge to Sodabashi Bridge it's called the "Path of Summer," and from Sodabashi Bridge to Kawanabashi Bridge it's known as the "Path of Fall."

The area along the Yamazaki River near the Ishikawa Bridge is a famous cherry blossom spot that can be reached by taking the Shioji Sakura Road from Mizuho Kuyakusho Station (Sakuradori Subway Line). In this area you can enjoy the blossoms in full bloom up close by going for a leisurely stroll along the Yamazaki River.
A beautiful sight you absolutely don't want to miss is the contrasting scenery of the Yamazaki River with the cherry blossoms, visible from the many nearby bridges.
Also, the Ishikawa Bridge area is not only appealing during the spring. In the summer it features the fresh greenery of trees and vegetation, in autumn it has the colorful foliage, and in the winter it has a sense of silence and tranquility. So the area is loved as a comfortable and relaxing spot throughout the year.

The wooden Kanaekohashi Bridge (google map) is a popular spot that offers a commanding view of the blossoms along the Yamazaki River. The reflection of the blossoms on the river's surface enchant all the visitors who come here.
In addition, during the cherry blossom season, the 120-meter stretch from Kanaebashi Bridge to Kanaekohashi Bridge is illuminated at night. This allows visitors to enjoy the mystical scenery of the evening blossoms.
Being able to enjoy the blossoms both during the day and at night, is the appealing feature of this spot.

Another recommended o-hanami walking course is the route that goes along the Yamazaki River's Shikinomichi (Path of Four Seasons) as far as Yatomi Park (google map).
When you take Exit One from Mizuho Undojo Higashi Station (Sakuradori Subway Line) the road leading to the park is also lined with beautiful cherry trees in full bloom. This is the ideal spot for enjoying a relaxing stroll.
There's also a tunnel of cherry trees on the east side of Yatomi Park. When you pass under the arch of cherry blossoms hanging overhead you can enjoy a flurry of cherry blossom petals. This is a spot where visitors can enjoy blossom viewing at their leisure along with the elegant rows of cherry trees.
Taking public transit is a convenient way of getting to the Yamazaki River area. After exiting from Mizuho Kuyakusho Station (Sakuradori Subway Line), go east for about one kilometer which will be a 13-minute walk.
Also, it's about 15 minutes on foot when you leave from Mizuho Undojo Nishi Station and go northeast for about 1.2 kilometers, and a 15-minute walk from Mizuho Undojo Higashi Station (Meijo Subway Line) heading northwest for about 1.2 kilometers.
Another option is to take a 25-minute bus ride from JR Kanayama Station, get off at Shidaiyakugakubu bus stop, then walk for about four minutes.
When coming by car, it takes about ten minutes from the Horita Exit of the Nagoya Expressway's Route 3 Odaka Route. However, there isn't an official parking lot, so please use the paid parking in the nearby area.
Please note that it gets very busy on weekdays from 11:00 to 16:00. If you want to avoid the crowds then it's a good idea to visit in the morning before 10:00 and also after dusk.
It also tends to be busy from 10:00 to 16:00 on weekends and public holidays. But if you visit before 9:00 it'll be relatively less crowded and you'll be able to enjoy o-hanami.
The peak season typically runs from late March until early April, during which you can enjoy the blossoms in full bloom to your heart's content.
When starting your walk from Ishikawa Bridge, the closest station is Mizuho Kuyakusho Station (Sakuradori Subway Line). When starting from Ochiai Bridge, Aratamabashi Station (intersection of Sakuradori Subway Line and Meijo Subway Line) is close by and convenient.

There is no official parking facility near the Yamazaki River. So when coming by car please use the nearby paid parking facilities.
